Dr. Urs Giger, Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, was presented with the AVMF/Winn Feline Foundation Research Award at the 2015 Merial NIH Veterinary Scholars Symposium at UC Davis. Dr. Giger is an internationally-recognized clinician-scientist, having previously received the Scientific Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Small Animal Veterinary Association and the International Bourgelat Award from the British Small Animal Veterinary Association. His extensive contributions to the expansion of knowledge in feline medicine include the characterization of the feline AB blood type system; description of a number of blood cell abnormalities such as osmotic fragility syndrome (causing anemia) and leukocyte adhesion deficiency; and discovery of numerous genetic defects associated with feline hereditary diseases.
