Dr. Clark Fobian elected AVMA president-elect

(SAN DIEGO, Calif.) August 3, 2012—Dr. Clark K. Fobian of Sedalia, Mo. was unanimously elected president-elect of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) by the AVMA House of Delegates (HOD) at its annual meeting today in San Diego, Calif.

Dr. Fobian’s term as president of the AVMA will begin next summer at the AVMA’s Annual Convention in Chicago, Ill. during the 150th anniversary of the AVMA. He will succeed Dr. Douglas G. Aspros, whose term begins this Tuesday, August 7, during the AVMA Annual Convention in San Diego, Calif.

“I’m proud and excited about being the president-elect of the AVMA.  I come to this position from a practitioner’s point of view, because that’s who I am and that’s who a significant number of our members are—they are practitioners. I respect all areas of the veterinary profession, which includes regulatory veterinarians, members of academia, researchers, and food animal practitioners.  I want to help ensure that the people who own and interact with animals receive excellent care from the veterinary profession,” says Dr. Fobian. “I look to the AVMA mission statement for guidance. It states that the goal of the association is to ‘improve animal and human health’ and that’s and that is my goal as president.”

Dr. Fobian has approximately 30 years of experience as a mixed and small animal veterinarian. He grew up in suburban St. Louis, and attended the University of Missouri-Columbia, attaining a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Biology in 1972 before earning his

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree in 1977. In 2011, Dr. Fobian was named Alumnus of the Year by the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine.

From 1972 to 1978, Dr. Fobian served in the U.S. Army Reserve as a medic for the 5503rd Army Hospital.

Dr. Fobian has had an active role in the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA), including serving as its president in 2003 and chairman of its board. In January of 2006, the Missouri VMA named Dr. Fobian Veterinarian of the Year.
