 AVMF again receives top rating

Charity Navigator congratulates AVMF on consecutive 4-star ratings

(SCHAUMBURG, Ill.) December 13, 2012 – The American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) is proud to announce that it has earned a coveted top rating from Charity Navigator for its sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency.

“As the AVMF approaches 2013 and our 50th anniversary, we are extremely proud of our 4-star ratings from Charity Navigator,” said Michael W. Cathey, executive director of the AVMF.  “The success of our Foundation is due to the efforts of many—our leadership, volunteers, donors, partners and staff—all working together with a commitment to embracing and enhancing the medical care and well-being of animals.”

“We have just launched our 2013 ‘Go for Gold’ fundraising campaign to commemorate our 50th anniversary. This concerted effort will raise funding needed to make a difference for animals this year and beyond,” Cathey says.  “We really need all animal lovers to step up and support us.  The mission and goals of our foundation provide a perfect focal point for philanthropic gifts from members of the veterinary community,  animal industry and the animal-owing public.  Together, we can make a difference..”

The four-star rating—the highest rating that Charity Navigator offers—underscores AVMF adherence to good governance, consistently sound fiscal responsibility and other best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities and behaviors.

"The executive board is extremely pleased with the overall Foundation operations and, most particularly, its programmatic impact,” says Dr. George W. Bishop, a practicing veterinarian in Carmel, Calif. and treasurer of the AVMF. “For the year 2011, 83 percent of our expenses were in direct support of our strategic goals; Humane Outreach/Animal Welfare, Education/Public Awareness, Veterinary Student Enhancement and Animal Health Research Support.”

Only 17 percent of the charities reviewed by the organization receive two or more consecutive four-star evaluations. Being recognized with consecutive years of 4-Star Charity Navigator designations certainly emphasizes the credibility of the AVMF and promotes its value as a national animal charity.

“As a donor to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, it is reassuring to know that the organization is so highly rated by a top monitoring organization like Charity Navigator,” says Kelly E. Lyons, Ph.D., a professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center.  “This four-star rating lets me know that the money I donate to the Foundation is going to the programs I want to support.”
