Amanda Arrington, founder of Pets for Life, named winner of 2018 AVMA Humane Award

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has named Amanda Arrington, founder and director of the Pets for Life program of the Humane Society of the United States, as the winner of the 2018 AVMA Humane Award.

The AVMA Humane Award is one of three AVMA Animal Welfare and Human Animal Bond Excellence Awards sponsored and funded by Merck Animal Health. It is given annually to a non-veterinarian to recognize achievement in advancing the welfare of animals through leadership, public service, education, research and product development, or advocacy. The recipient is selected by the AVMA Animal Welfare Committee.

Dr. Michael J. Topper, president of the AVMA, will present the award to Arrington at the 2018 AVMA Convention in Denver on Friday, July 13.

Arrington began developing the Pets for Life (PFL) program in 2010 to raise awareness and address the needs of pets in poverty, based on the idea that all community members love their pets, and that all pets deserve access to veterinary care. Pets for Life addresses the inequity and lack of access to pet resources people experience in underserved communities through community outreach and pet owner support services.

"I am honored to be recognized by the AVMA for the work of PFL," Arrington said. "No one should be denied the opportunity to experience the benefits and joy that comes from the human-animal bond, and receiving this award helps to spread that message."

Arrington also founded Coalition to Unchain Dogs, now known as Beyond Fences and is still active in animal welfare issues in Durham, N.C.

By recognizing animal welfare-related achievements through its Animal Welfare and Human Animal Bond awards, the AVMA hopes to raise awareness of the important roles people play in improving understanding of animal welfare-related issues.
