Recruitment for three Congressional fellowships is on - November 1, 2001

Thanks to the decision made by the AVMA House of Delegates during the AVMA's 2001 Annual Convention in Boston, the AVMF is currently accepting applications for three AVMA/AVMF Congressional Science Fellowship positions for 2002–2003. Previously there was one new fellowship each year.

Congressional Fellows serve as consultants, researchers, and scientific resources on staff for members of Congress and congressional committees for one-year intervals in Washington, D.C. Because these fellows serve as general science advisers, they must be comfortable working on a broad range of policy issues beyond the scope of veterinary medicine.

The Congressional fellowship begins the last week of August, when the fellows come to Washington, D.C. to begin their fellowship year. After an AVMA-sponsored orientation to many of the scientific resources in the capital, the fellows participate in the American Academy for the Advancement of Sciences fellowship orientation program the first week of September. Following these programs, the fellows begin to interview with congressional offices to find the best placement for their fellowship through the AAAS's Congressional Fellowship Program.

Applications for the 2002–2003 AVMA/AVMF Congressional Science Fellowships should be submitted to the AVMA Governmental Relations Division by Jan. 15, 2002. A complete application must include a letter of intent; a curriculum vitae; a letter of support from the applicant's local, state, allied, or specialty veterinary medical organization; two letters of support from professional colleagues; and a personal statement of no more than 750 words that outlines the candidate's qualifications, commitment to veterinary medicine, and reasons for pursuing the fellowship. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and members of the AVMA.

A selection committee will review the applications and select the finalists. Finalists will be asked to complete a timed writing assignment and to interview with the selection committee. Interviews are generally held in March at AVMA headquarters in Schaumburg, Ill. Finalists are usually notified by the end of March whether they have been selected to serve as a fellow.
