The National Animal Health Monitoring System is planning a study to fill information gaps related to the health of the US sheep population.

NAHMS is a nonregulatory program sponsored by the USDA. The Sheep 2001 study, to be conducted in 22 states, will update the Sheep '96 study and collect additional information addressing the industry's current health priorities.

Diseases and health problems such as paratuberculosis (Johne's disease), intestinal parasites, and scrapie top the list of industry interests. Other topics affecting sheep health, such as nutrition and management practices related to foot rot, are also priorities that NAHMS will address through this study.
