Reed leaves APHIS for Virginia
Dr. Craig A. Reed has resigned as administrator of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service at the Department of Agriculture and in September began a two-year visiting professorship at Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Reed has been with the USDA since 1973, working in several capacities, including deputy administrator of the office of field operations at the Food Safety Inspection Service and more recently as associate administrator for APHIS. In July 1998 he was named by then—Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman to head the agency. "My new position gives me an extraordinary opportunity to work on the development of a joint institute for food, nutrition, and health that integrates teaching, research, and extension programs among Virginia Tech's colleges for agriculture and life sciences, veterinary medicine, natural resources, and human resources and education," Dr. Reed said in a letter announcing his resignation to APHIS employees. "I will also be teaching at the veterinary school and advising graduate students who are interested in pursuing careers in food safety and agriculture policy," he said. Bobby Acord is acting administrator of APHIS until a permanent administrator is found. | |
