Thanks to generous supporters of the AVMF Education Fund, including $31,000 from Pets.com, the Foundation distributed funds to each of the AVMA-accredited veterinary schools in August.
As in years past, these funds are to be restricted to scholarships for veterinary medical students. Although the specific distribution of the donations is at the discretion of each college, the money must be used for direct student assistance, to help defray bona fide educational expenses for veterinary medical students recognized as needy by the schools.
Dr. Daryl Buss, dean of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, reacted to this year's donation of $1,160, stating, "Scholarship support is critical to the school's success. With the decline in state and federal funding, private gifts are playing an even more crucial role in the advancement of our veterinary medical program."
