AVMA PLIT pays dividends to workers' compensation participants, names trustee and scholars

Dr. William J. McEniry, Ashton, Illinois, has been installed as a new AVMA PLIT trustee. He is currently the owner of Ashton Veterinary Clinic, a mixed practice in Illinois. Dr. McEniry has served as Illinois delegate to the AVMA House of Delegates (1987-1992), House Advisory Committee chairman (1989-1990), and AVMA treasurer (1993-1999). He is a member of the AASP, AABP, Illinois State VMA (board of directors, chairman 1982-1983), Northern Illinois VMA, and Iowa VMA.

Dividend checks totaling $491,324 were mailed in June to AVMA PLIT Workers' Compensation Program participants insured with Centennial Insurance Company between Sept 1, 1998 and Sept 1, 1999. This represents a 6.7 percent dividend and the sixth consecutive year of program dividends. Total cumulative dividend returns are approaching $6 million.

The goal of the AVMA PLIT-sponsored Workers' Compensation Insurance Program is to provide AVMA members a quality product at the lowest possible, up-front cost, with the potential to earn dividends when the program's experience is better than expected.

The 1999-2000 AVMA association year marks the second year for the AVMA PLIT's SAVMA Scholarship Program. This year the PLIT awarded seven $500 scholarships as part of its initiative to support veterinary students. Six of those seven scholars have been chosen. They are Eileen McHugh, Auburn University; David Dawson, University of California-Davis; Mark Flair, Colorado State University; Michael Holmberg, Iowa State University; Rebecca Arbeseman, University of Missouri-Columbia; and Kara Sessums, Texas A&M University.

The scholarships will be distributed to each college of veterinary medicine once, until all colleges have had the opportunity to participate over a period of four years.
