Bartels is AVMA board chairman

AVMA Executive Board members on July 22 elected Dr. Jan E. Bartels, Auburn, Ala, as the new board chairman for the 2000-2001 term. Executive Board District III member since 1995, Dr. Bartels served as vice chairman with 1999-2000 chairman Dr. Leonard M. Tinney. Dr. Harmon A. Rogers was elected vice chairman.

Dr. Bartels joined the faculty of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1967, attaining the rank of professor in 1976, and has headed the Radiology Department since 1978. Since 1990, he has directed the Ware Imaging Center at the university.

In 1968, Dr. Bartels was certified by the American College of Veterinary Radiology. He served on the ACVR Credentials and Examining Committee, the Executive Council, and the Residency Evaluation Committee, and as president.

Involved in organized veterinary medicine for many years, Dr. Bartels has volunteered his time and services to the AVMA as a member of the Council on Veterinary Service for six years, five as chairman. He also served six-year terms on the Council on Education and the Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities, and chaired the council's Committee on Academic Affairs. He is presently a member of the AVMA Congressional Action Network and the AVMA Political Action Committee.

His state and local involvements include memberships in the Southern Veterinary Medical Federation; the East Alabama VMA, serving two years as president; and the Alabama VMA, serving as chairman of the Radiation Safety Committee and Advisory Committee since 1967.
