Task force to examine AVMA Model Veterinary Practice Act

Posted May 15, 2000

The AVMA Executive Board approved a recommendation that the board chairman appoint a six-member AVMA/American Association of Veterinary State Boards task force to review the AVMA Model Practice Act and create a uniform practice act that will serve not only the AVMA membership but state licensing agencies as well.

In fall 1999, the Council on Veterinary Service was charged by the board with reviewing the AVMA Model Practice Act and developing recommendations for updating verbiage of the original act, which was adopted in 1996.

It was learned, however, that a subcommittee of the AAVSB also is working on a model practice act. The subcommittee plans to present its work to the AAVSB delegate assembly in July 2000.

The task force will be composed of two AVMA Executive Board members, two AAVSB members, one Council on Veterinary Service member, and one Judicial Council member. The task force will hold a two-day meeting to develop the uniform practice act, which will be forwarded to the board for approval.
