The 13th International Exhibition on Animals in Art was shown in the Veterinary Medicine Library of the Louisiana State University from March 18-April 17. The unusual is the usual fare at these exhibitions, with imaginative artists from around the world presenting their paintings, sculptures, and drawings of animals.
The exhibition is sponsored by the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, Companions of the School of Veterinary Medicine, and Waltham. This year's judge and juror, David Lusk, co-owner of the Ledbetter Lusk Galleries in Memphis, Tenn, reviewed 607 pieces entered, and narrowed the field to 66 chosen for juried competition.
The Best of Show prize went to "Paula" by James Mullen of Oneonta, NY. It's a small, geometric pen-and-ink drawing on a white background that depicts the image of a cat.
Dr. Janis H. Audin, AVMA editor-in-chief, was once again in attendance to choose one piece to be reproduced on the cover of the JAVMA. Her selection, "Yellow Dog Rain Game" by Doreen Lindstedt of Portland, Ore, is featured this issue (see About the Cover on page 1683).
Sue Loubiere, head librarian of the LSU Veterinary Medicine Library, organized the event. The 14th international exhibition is scheduled for March 2001. Artists who wish to submit pieces to be considered for that show should contact Loubiere at (225) 346-3172.
