AVMA supports new lobbyist for Minor Use/Minor Species Coalition

Posted May 15, 2000

The Executive Board has approved a one-time, $20,000 appropriation for partial support of a lobbyist engaged by the Minor Use/Minor Species Coalition.

The AVMA joined the coalition this past fall as part of its ongoing effort to enhance animal welfare by increasing the availability of drugs for minor uses and minor species.

The goal of the coalition is to increase drug availability through a legislative initiative. A bill drafted by the coalition is a two-pronged approach that seeks to amend the federal Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act and the Internal Revenue Code.

The FD&C Act proposals are aimed at giving the FDA flexibility to authorize the legal use of drugs in ways that ensure the public health. The tax code proposals include financial incentives to encourage pharmaceutical manufacturers to develop drugs for minor uses and minor species.
