AAVMC appoints Heider executive director

Dr. Lawrence E. Heider has been named executive director of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges, effective May 1, 2002. Dr. Heider is a former dean of the Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island in Canada, where he served from 1991-1998. Currently he is president of his consulting firm, L. E. Heider and Associates Inc.

In his new position, Dr. Heider will manage and coordinate the affairs of the AAVMC as they relate to teaching, research, and service missions of the academic veterinary community. He will also serve as AAVMC representative to allied educational and research groups headquartered primarily in the Washington, D.C., area.

After his tenure as dean at UPEI, Dr. Heider became the acting president of the university for a year. Before he joined UPEI, Dr. Heider was on faculty at The Ohio State University in various positions for 25 years. He is professor emeritus at UPEI and OSU. Dr. Heider is a 1964 graduate of OSU and a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine.

The AAVMC coordinates the affairs of the U.S. and Canadian veterinary colleges, departments of veterinary science and comparative medicine, animal medical centers, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Glasgow, Scotland.
