The formation of a working group addressing the increasingly complicated issue of prescribing and dispensing of animal drugs has been approved.
Over the past several years, the number of pharmacies offering dispensing services to veterinary patients has grown, and includes Internet and mail order sites. Veterinarians have contacted AVMA staff and the Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents either seeking clarification or to complain about prescribing and dispensing irregularities.
The council recommended that a working group be convened at AVMA headquarters in Schaumburg, Ill., to identify the scope, importance, and priority of issues surrounding prescribing and dispensing of animal drugs, and to provide recommendations to veterinarians.
Invitations to participate will be extended to the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, American Association of Veterinary State Boards, Society of Veterinary Hospital Pharmacists, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Department of Agriculture. AVMA representatives to the group approved by the board are Drs. Dawn Boothe, M. Gatz Riddell Jr., David Hustead, and Angela Baysinger.
The group will report to the council, which will make any necessary recommendations to the board. A meeting date has not yet been set.
