The Executive Board has approved revisions to the AVMA position on surgical procedures for nonveterinary students.
The position states that the AVMA does not advocate instruction of non-veterinary students in surgical procedures. If such instruction is provided, however, surgery should be performed only within the context of a structured course of study administered by a postsecondary institution, under direct veterinary supervision.
The position statement defines veterinary supervision as having a veterinarian physically present, and obtaining prior approval of the appropriate institutional animal care and use committee.
