The AVMA welcomed its new director of marketing, Jim Flanigan, to the Communications Division on Nov. 5, just three months after the division was created.

Flanigan comes with more than a decade of experience providing communications and marketing management for nonprofit associations. Previously he was director of marketing and communications for Women in Cable & Telecommunications. He has also served as director of communications for the Illinois Pharmacists Association and as public relations director for the Variety Club Children's Charities.

His volunteer service includes election as national president of the 112-year-old Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity. Currently he serves as its chief volunteer officer and on the executive committee of its foundation.

Flanigan earned a BS degree with majors in journalism and mass communication from Iowa State University, where he held chapter leadership positions in his fraternity.

"At Iowa State I had an additional perception of veterinary medicine from the perspective of a very large veterinary school that was literally down the road from where I lived," Flanigan said. "You can't help but be completely immersed with it when you're in Ames like I was. I know how hard students need to work in their training to become doctors of veterinary medicine."
