Video of cows too sick or injured to stand being dragged by chains, rolled with forklifts, and shot with high-intensity water hoses by employees of Hallmark/Westland Meat Co. was screened at a March 12 hearing of the House Energy and Commerce investigative subcommittee attended by Hallmark/Westland President Steve Mendell, who had been subpoenaed.

The American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists and Pet Health Systems are launching the ACVO National Service Dog Eye Exam event the week of May 12. This event, whose primary sponsor is Merial, will provide free eye examinations and preventive health reports for thousands of service dogs.


The House Committee on Natural Resources' Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, and Oceans held a hearing March 11 on the Captive Primate Safety Act (H.R. 2964). The legislation would amend the Lacey Act Amendments of 1981, making chimpanzees, monkeys, and other nonhuman primates prohibited wildlife species, thus strictly limiting commerce in pet primates.
