Elaine Carpenter

Dr. Carpenter (Louisiana State '97), 49, Cave Creek, Arizona, died Aug. 20, 2018. During her career, she practiced equine medicine in San Francisco, Phoenix, and Cave Creek. Dr. Carpenter also extended her services to the Arizona Equine Rescue Organization. She was a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Dr. Carpenters' family survives her.

Kenneth G. Custis

Dr. Custis (Iowa State '56), 97, Scotland, South Dakota, died Aug. 31, 2018. He practiced large animal medicine in Scotland for 45 years. Dr. Custis served in the Army as a captain during World War II. His wife, Nola Jean; two sons and a daughter; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren survive him.

Jeffrey S. Dennis

Dr. Dennis (Purdue '85), 59, Olathe, Kansas, died Sept. 19, 2018. A diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, he was a founding member of BluePearl Veterinary Partners, with emergency and specialty veterinary hospitals nationwide. Dr. Dennis retired in 2018. Earlier in his career, he was in private practice in Connecticut for a few years and founded Veterinary Internal Medicine Specialist of Kansas City, which later became the Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center in Overland Park, Kansas.

Dr. Dennis was a founding member and charter president of the Veterinary Specialty Practice Alliance. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Debra S. Harber-Dennis (Purdue '85), a retired small animal veterinarian; two daughters; his parents; and a sister. Gilbert J. Feldman

Dr. Feldman (Cornell '47), 92, Mill Neck, New York, died July 28, 2018. He owned a small animal practice on Long Island, New York, prior to retirement. Dr. Feldman served on the board of directors of Cove Animal Rescue in Glen Cove, New York. His family survives him.

Fred M. Garrett Sr.

Dr. Garrett (Georgia '57), 85, Dothan, Alabama, died Dec. 27, 2018. Prior to retirement in 1991, he practiced at what is now known as Dothan Animal Hospital, initially in mixed animal medicine, focusing later on small animals. Dr. Garrett was a past chair of the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners and a member of the Alabama VMA. In 2011, he received the ALVMA Distinguished Service Award. Active in his community, Dr. Garrett served on the Houston County Port Authority, Dothan-Houston County Airport Authority, and Alabama wing of the U.S. Civil Air Patrol, with the rank of captain.

His wife, Mae Jo; three sons; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister survive him. One son, Dr. Benjamin A. Garrett II (Auburn '87), practices at Dothan Animal Hospital. Memorials may be made to Respite Ministry, United Methodist Church, 1380 W. Main St., Dothan, AL 36301.

Harold E. Hayden

Dr. Hayden (Missouri '58), 86, Worth, Missouri, died Nov. 22, 2018. He practiced mixed animal medicine in Barnard, Missouri, from 1958 until retirement in 2002. Dr. Hayden was a life member of the Missouri VMA. His wife, Wanda; two sons and two daughters; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a brother and two sisters survive him. Dr. Hayden is also survived by several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

Leroy H. Krum

Dr. Krum (California-Davis '56), 88, Fresno, California, died Oct. 24, 2018. He was a large animal veterinarian. His sister survives him.

Richard D. Lindsay

Dr. Lindsay (Michigan State '54), 88, Andover, Massachusetts, died Nov. 7, 2018. In 1958, he founded Andover Animal Hospital, where he practiced mixed animal medicine for more than 60 years. Dr. Lindsay also served as the animal inspector for Andover for 55 years, helped establish the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, and partnered with the Massachusetts School of Law to found The Shadow Fund, offering services to those who cannot afford to pay medical costs for their animals. Early in his career, he served in the Army as a food inspector with the rank of first lieutenant.

Dr. Lindsay was a past president of the Massachusetts and New England VMAs. In 1996, he received the MVMA Distinguished Service Award. Active in his community, Dr. Lindsay served on the boards of directors of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, Merrimack College, and Lawrence Boys and Girls Club; was a past chair of the Greater Lawrence Area United Way; served on the advisory board of Ironstone Farm, offering therapy via horses; and was active with the Boy Scouts of America and Rotary Club.

He received several honors for his work in the community, including the Yankee Clipper Council of Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Citizen Award in 2000, the Friends of Merrimack College Friend-of-the-Year Award in 2005, and the Rotary Club of Andover's Citizens Who Care Award in 2013. In 2016, Ironstone Farm honored Dr. Lindsay as Father of their Sponsor a Child program that continues to enable donors to give children access to horse therapy.

His wife, Betty; a son and a daughter; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren survive him. Dr. Lindsay's son and daughter-in-law, Drs. R. David Lindsay Jr. and Martha Lindsay, both 1979 veterinary graduates of Michigan State University, practice in North Andover. Franklin W. Rapp

Dr. Rapp (Cornell '53), 89, Saratoga Springs, New York, died Sept. 11, 2018. He owned Aqueduct Animal Hospital, a small animal practice in Schenectady, New York, from 1956 until retirement in 1998. Before that, Dr. Rapp served in the Air Force.

He was active with the Boy Scouts of America and served on the boards of directors of several charities in Schenectady and Saratoga, New York. Dr. Rapp is survived by four daughters; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister.

Lawrence A. Rothe

Dr. Rothe (Texas A&M '72), 70, Concord, California, died Nov. 26, 2018. He practiced small animal medicine at Disney Pet Hospital in Concord for almost 30 years. Dr. Rothe's wife, Bonnie Clare; two sons and a daughter; two grandchildren; and six siblings survive him.

C. Gene Sellers

Dr. Sellers (Michigan State '65), 76, Hillsdale, Michigan, died July 29, 2018. He owned a mixed animal practice in Hillsdale for more than 50 years. A past president of the Michigan Dynamometer Horse Pulling Association, Dr. Sellers was an inductee of the Michigan Horse Pullers Hall of Fame. His wife, Marcia; a son, two daughters, two stepsons, and a stepdaughter; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and three sisters and a brother survive him.

Coral Turman

Dr. Turman (North Carolina State '05), 43, Middleburg, Florida, died Sept. 14, 2018. She practiced small animal medicine at Creekside Animal Hospital in Middleburg, also incorporating veterinary acupuncture into her practice. Dr. Turman is survived by her husband, Jason, and three sons.
