Veterinarians and pharmacologists in cattle industries have developed new guidelines intended to help beef and dairy cattle veterinarians select treatments.

The American Association of Bovine Practitioners published the guidelines, which are available as a PDF file.

The four-page document gives instruction on topics such as establishing a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, following federal regulatory requirements for extralabel drug administration, preventing illegal drug residues, and preventing use of inappropriate drugs.

Dr. Keith Sterner, who chaired the task force that developed the guidelines, said in an announcement from the AABP that the information is intended to apply to diverse bovine practices.

“AABP members and other beef and dairy veterinarians desiring to further the responsible, ethical, and appropriate use of pharmaceuticals in their practice and on client operations will find that these guidelines are a sound foundation on which to base proper drug use,” he said in the announcement.
