 New foundation to support specialists

Posted Oct. 15, 2014

A new charity will provide scholarships, support resident training, and fund research as well as promote its parent specialty organization and specialist training.

The American Board of Veterinary Practitioners Foundation plans to “promote excellence in species-oriented veterinary medicine in clinical practice and academia,” foundation president Dr. James Kober said in an announcement published in September. He said in a subsequent interview, also in September, that the Internal Revenue Service had just given the foundation recognition as a nonprofit charitable organization.

Dr. Kober said that, once the foundation’s endowment fund exceeds $100,000, the foundation’s leaders plan to start giving scholarships to students to help them attend the organization’s annual symposium and to give grants to residents. The September announcement also noted that the foundation’s board was increasing efforts to build the fund ahead of the ABVP Symposium Oct. 30-Nov. 2 in Nashville.
