In the world of companion animal medicine, many private practitioners are worrying about competition from animal welfare organizations that provide veterinary services--especially now that so many private practices have seen a drop in visits as a result of the weak economy and other factors. Veterinarians and others at animal welfare organizations that offer veterinary services to the public generally say they focus on providing care for companion animals that otherwise would not receive any, such as pets belonging to low-income clients.

AVMA

AVMA stakeholders recently came together for a two-day summit to share ideas for making the current AVMA governance structure more member-driven and better able to meet future demands.

Issues

Officials with the Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service expect to find illegal drug and chemical residues in meat and eggs more easily through expanded, more efficient testing procedures. Agency officials announced in July they were implementing technology that could test a single sample for dozens of illegal chemical residues.

Practice

September is National Preparedness Month, and the theme for this year is “Pledge to Prepare.” Veterinarians are encouraged to do their part to help clients and community members learn about hazards and what to do with their pets or livestock in an emergency.
