Event: Annual conference, Feb. 23-25, Roanoke
Program: The conference drew more than 600 attendees and offered 75 hours of continuing education with tracks in small animal, food animal, equine, and complementary medicine; public practice; practice management; and recent-graduate issues. Temple Grandin, PhD, delivered the keynote address, "Understanding animal behavior." Dr. Grandin is a professor of animal science at Colorado State University and consults with the livestock industry on facility design, livestock handling, and animal welfare.
Awards: Paul F. Landis Veterinarian of the Year: Dr. Robert C. Brown, Arlington. A 1971 graduate of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Brown is the founder of Cherrydale Veterinary Clinic, where he serves as director. Distinguished Virginia Veterinarian: Dr. Beecher Watson Sr., Church Road. A 1958 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Watson founded Amelia Bovine Clinic. He has served on the Virginia Board of Veterinary Medicine and is a founding member of the Virginia Academy of Food Animal Practice.
