A nationwide earthquake preparedness drill will be held at 10:15 a.m. local time on Feb. 7. Thousands of people across eight states will participate in the 2012 Great Central U.S. ShakeOut. The AVMA is a registered participant. The ShakeOut also provides an impetus for other states to join in the drill or to schedule one at a different time or date.

A few states have their own ShakeOut events. Drills are planned in April by Utah and in October by California, Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon. This year's governmental national-level exercise will focus on cyber security and be broken into four parts over the course of the year.

Earthquake preparedness resources and links to the ShakeOut are available on the AVMA website here.

Relatedly, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has released an earthquake mitigation tool kit for businesses.
