AVMA gives guidance on DEA, controlled substances
|Posted April 18, 2011|
New AVMA guidance is intended to help veterinarians understand and follow rules affecting controlled substances.
The guidance includes information on record keeping, security, and the criteria for who must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration; it is available at www.avma.org/issues. Scroll down to the headline "Veterinary compliance with the DEA and the Controlled Substances Act."
The guidance documents state that violations of the Controlled Substances Act can lead to loss of DEA registration and access to critical veterinary drugs. The documents are intended to provide the AVMA's interpretation of the law and current agency regulations.
