Event: Annual meeting, March 4-6, Corvallis
Awards:Veterinarian of the Year: Dr. Gregg K. Takashima, Lake Oswego. A 1983 graduate of the University of Minnesota, Dr. Takashima owns Parkway Veterinary Hospital in Lake Oswego. He is president of the American Animal Hospital Association and serves as the U.S. delegate to the World Small Animal Veterinary Association. Dr. Takashima also serves on the board of directors of the American Association of Human-Animal Bond Veterinarians and is a past president of the Portland VMA and Dove Lewis Memorial Emergency and Critical Care Animal Hospital. Meritorious Service Award: Dr. Steven R. Brown, Newport, for contributions toward the advancement of the association, veterinary profession, and community. A 1974 graduate of Colorado State University, Dr. Brown owns Animal Medical Care of Newport. He is a past president of the Oregon VMA and a past member of the Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board. Dr. Brown serves as a trustee with the Oregon Animal Health Foundation. Veterinary Service Award: Dr. Bill F. McCulloch, Beaverton. A 1956 graduate of Iowa State University, Dr. McCulloch retired in 1999 as interim dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University. He co-founded The Delta Society in Portland in 1977 and served as chair of an AVMA Human-Animal Bond Task Force in 1981. Dr. McCulloch was instrumental in helping to pass the Housing and Urban Renewal Recovery Act in 1983. Animal Welfare Award: Dr. Scott Hansen, Gresham. A 1980 graduate of Iowa State University, Dr. Hansen owns Columbia Equine Hospital in Gresham. In 2009, he established Sound Equine Options, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the needs of horses whose owners cannot afford to provide them with basic care. SEO's veterinary-directed programs address the unwanted horse issue nationally, but are targeted specifically at horses in the local region. Practice Manager of the Year: Jessie Merritt, Vancouver, Wash. Merritt is practice manager at Oswego Veterinary Hospital in Lake Oswego. Dedicated to customer service and patient care, she also provides assistance to nonprofit organizations in the area in the form of medical and surgical care, adoption services, and supplies, and has been instrumental in organizing and facilitating meetings with practice managers in the Portland area. Technician of the Year: Carey Blake, Corvallis. Blake works at West Hills Animal Hospital in Corvallis. She keeps the practice's pain protocols current by attending courses to learn the latest techniques in multimodal pain management. Blake has also been integral in helping the practice attain its American Animal Hospital Association certification. Outstanding Industry Representative: Vern Mason, Vancouver, Wash. Mason works for Butler Schein Animal Health. He was recognized for his commitment and service to veterinarians and veterinary practices. President's Award: Dr. Cyril Clarke, Corvallis. Dr. Clarke is dean of the Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He was honored for his work to advance the veterinary profession.
Business: Discussions were held on the Bayer-Brakke study on veterinary practices, future of veterinary education, scope of veterinary practice issues, and the role and actions of the veterinary licensing board.
