AVMA, European federation collaborate
Posted March 1, 2011
An informal gathering between the AVMA and the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe took place Jan. 23 at the Hotel Pullman Paris Tour Eiffel.
FVE President Walter Winding (Austria), Vice President Christophe Buhot (France), and Executive Director Jan Vaarten met with the AVMA's Dr. Larry R. Corry, immediate past president, and Dr. Ron DeHaven, CEO.
Dr. Ron DeHaven, AVMA CEO, gives a short speech
on Vet2011 activities in the United States, particularly
with regard to the congressional resolutions
acknowledging 2011 as World Veterinary Year.
They all agreed that the two organizations have far more in common than not and that they should issue joint statements supporting their mutually held positions. Potential topics discussed include the role of private veterinarians in assisting national veterinary services; the role of veterinarians beyond pets, using as a basis for the statement Vet2011's overall effort to highlight veterinarians' contributions in areas such as public health, food safety, and biomedical research; veterinary education and the need to update educational systems; and the judicious use of antimicrobials.
Drs. Vaarten and DeHaven will coordinate this effort in advance of the FVE spring meeting this June in Palermo, Sicily.
