Iowa State fills deanship internally

Dr. Lisa K. Nolan, professor and associate dean of research and graduate studies in Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, has been named dean of the college, effective Jan. 15, 2011.

Dr. Nolan succeeds Dr. John U. Thomson, who is retiring as dean Jan. 1 but will remain on the ISU faculty, focusing on outcomes-based medicine and best production animal practices (see JAVMA, March 15, 2010). Executive Vice President and Provost Elizabeth Hoffman appointed Dr. Nolan following an eight-month, nationwide search.

"Under her leadership, we look to the college to enhance its research and educational excellence, building on the outstanding work of John Thomson in fundraising, facilities, and faculty hires," Hoffman said.

Dr. Nolan joined the ISU faculty in 2003 as chair of the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventive Medicine. She served as associate dean of academic and student affairs at the college from 2007-2009. Since 2003, she also has been an adjunct professor in the Department of Veterinary and Microbiological Sciences at North Dakota State University in Fargo.

In 1988, Dr. Nolan graduated from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. She received a master's in 1989 and a doctorate in medical microbiology in 1992 from the same school.

Her research focuses on bacterial diseases of production animals, including their effects on animal health, human health, and food safety.
