Two former Executive Board members are running for 2011-2012 AVMA president-elect.

Drs. Douglas G. Aspros and Gary S. Brown launched their campaigns July 30 during the Candidates Introductory Breakfast in Atlanta.

A 1975 graduate of Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Aspros owns two practices and is a senior manager of an emergency care clinic in Westchester County, N.Y.

"AVMA needs engaged and effective leadership if we're to find our way into the future we want to live in, one that best serves our members and supports the important work that they do," he said at the breakfast.

Dr. Aspros was elected to an unexpired term on the Executive Board as District I representative in 2006 and spent two years as vice chair. Prior to joining the board, Dr. Aspros served six years on the AVMA Council on Education, which included a stint as council chair. His term on the Executive Board expired in early August.

Dr. Brown just completed his second and final one-year term as AVMA vice president. A 1984 graduate of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, he owns a small animal practice in Princeton, W.Va. Dr. Brown was West Virginia delegate in the House of Delegates before he was elected in 2008 as AVMA vice president, serving as liaison to the Student AVMA and student chapters.

"I see the AVMA as a diamond, borne and maintained by a humble and servant's leader with steady work and bright ideas," he said. "I hope over the years I've demonstrated my commitment to the AVMA. I hope I will be allowed to continue this commitment as AVMA president-elect."

The last contested election for AVMA president-elect was in 2006.
