American Embryo Transfer Association

Event: Annual meeting, Oct. 16-18, Kansas City, Mo.
Program: The conference, held in conjunction with the Canadian Embryo Transfer Association, drew more than 350 attendees. Speakers offered the latest clinical and research information on follicle dynamics, superovulation, cryopreservation, nutrition, sexed semen, and in-vitro fertilization technology. Preconvention seminars covered the basics of embryo transfer and included demonstrations on emerging technology.
Business: Bylaw revisions were presented and discussions were held on additional degrees of technician recognition. A new education committee was charged with improving use of the AETA Web site. It was decided that a new convention committee will be established to enhance the annual convention experience. The AETA Cooperator Committee discussed their coordination of inspections of 24 U.S. embryo production centers by officials from the People's Republic of China's Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

Event: Annual conference, March 13-15, Corvallis
Program: The conference, held jointly by the Oregon VMA and Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine, drew more than 600 attendees. Scientific sessions included those on companion animal pathology, dentistry, anesthesia and pain management, allergies, dermatology, equine lameness and compounding, food animal virology and immunology, and euthanasia and pet hospices.
Awards: Meritorious Service Award: Dr. Scott G. Hendy, Roseburg, for contributions toward the advancement of the association, veterinary profession, and community. A 1975 graduate of the University of California-Davis, Dr. Hendy practices at Parkway Animal Hospital. He has served as one of two OVMA representatives to the Wild West Veterinary Conference for 12 years, with two terms as president. Dr. Hendy is a past president of the OVMA and has co-chaired the continuing education committee. He was honored for his support of humane shelters, involvement in educational programs for livestock owners, and participation in 4-H Club events. Veterinary Service Award: Dr. Jerry L. Boggs, Eugene, for promoting the veterinary profession and/or the well-being of animals. A 1974 graduate of Purdue University, Dr. Boggs practices at Bush Animal Hospital. He is a past president of the OVMA and Lake County VMA. Dr. Boggs organized a partnership between area veterinarians and the Green Hill Humane Society to provide spaying of feral cats. He helped establish the Springfield-Eugene Emergency Veterinary Hospital. Animal Welfare Award: Dr. Doug McInnis, Klamath Falls. A 1987 graduate of Oregon State University, Dr. McInnis practices at West Ridge Animal Clinic. He is a past president of the OVMA and has served on the board of the Oregon Animal Health Foundation. Dr. McInnis advocated and promoted humane animal laws in Oregon and helped initiate the Animal Care Forum, an educational program bringing together animal control, shelter, and veterinary communities to discuss the stewardship of animals in the state. President's Award: Dr. Matthew E. Fricke, Springfield. A 1994 graduate of Washington State University, Dr. Fricke practices at McKenzie Animal Hospital. He is chair of the OVMA board of directors and serves as one of its delegates to the Wild West Veterinary Conference. Moderator chair of the WWVC, Dr. Fricke established and chaired the complementary and alternative medicine track at the WWVC.

Program: The conference featured presentations that encompassed all aspects of in vivo and in vitro research, in addition to clinical and biomechanical studies related to traditional orthopedics, neuro-orthopedics, and onco-orthopedics.
Awards: Hohn-Johnson Research Award: Drs. Reunan Guillou and Loic Dejardin, East Lansing, Mich., for "In vivo evaluation of a novel total elbow arthroplasty system in dogs." Best Research Presentation: Dr. Alastair Coomer, Gainesville, Fla., for "Anti-tumor effects of radiation therapy, carboplatin and combretastatin-A4 phosphate combination therapies in a mouse model of xenografted canine osteosarcoma." Best Clinical Presentation: Dr. Kevin Au, Urbana, Ill., for "Comparison of short and long term function and radiographic osteoarthrosis in dogs with naturally occurring cranial cruciate ligament injury receiving postoperative physical therapy and tibial plateau leveling osteotomy or lateral fabellar suture." Best Clinical Podium Presentation: Dr. Kelley Thieman, Gainesville, Fla., for "The contact mechanics of meniscal repair and partial meniscectomy as treatment for simulated bucket handle tears in the stifle of dogs." Best Research Podium Presentation: Dr. Ryan Carpenter, Windsor, Colo., for "Osteoblastic differentiation of equine bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells with combined BMP-2 and -7 genetic modifications in the presence and absence of dexamethasone."
