Pet dental campaign reaches 15th year

Posted Dec. 1, 2008

The "Pets Need Dental Care, Too" campaign starts its 15th year with National Pet Dental Health Month in February.

The campaign provides materials to help veterinary practices promote oral health for pets through regular, professional examinations and an in-home dental care routine.

Co-sponsoring the educational campaign are the AVMA, Hill's Pet Nutrition, American Veterinary Dental Society, Academy of Veterinary Dentistry, American Veterinary Dental College, Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians, and Veterinary Oral Health Council.

For 2009, Hill's is once again producing free campaign kits. The contents of each kit include a program guide with tips on how to educate clients and the community about pet dental care, several client guides to pet dental care, postcards inviting clients to schedule a dental examination, and a form for practices to enter the annual Dental Awareness Contest. Kits are available on request, while supplies last, by calling toll-free (877) 552-1550 or visiting

The campaign sponsors have updated the Web site, and many of the kit materials are easy to download. The site provides a hospital banner and poster, research articles, activities for children, and information about at-home oral pet care.

Because dental disease is a year-round health concern, campaign sponsors suggest that veterinary professionals should visit the Web site often for information to support dental recommendations.
