The AVMA has hired Dr. Derrick D. Hall as an assistant director and program director of the Membership and Field Services Division. Dr. Hall, who joined the AVMA in June, is working with veterinary students as an adviser to the Student AVMA.

"Dr. Hall's strong background in food supply and equine veterinary medicine, along with his enthusiasm and passion for mentoring veterinary students about the issues important to our profession and work-life balance, make him an outstanding addition to the AVMA Membership and Field Services Division team," said division director Dr. Rosemary J. LoGiudice.

"The AVMA has an ambitious and important goal of attracting more veterinarians into food supply veterinary medicine, and I'm confident that Dr. Hall's experience will be an immense asset when he is mentoring students," she added.

Dr. Hall is working with Dr. LoGiudice and other division staff in overseeing, planning, and administering tasks that include advising the national student association and student chapters on policies and issues and assisting with overseeing the processes involved with the recruitment and retention of members.

Besides advising the SAVMA, the 2006 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine will provide advice to Student Chapters of the AVMA and their faculty advisers.

"I am very excited to be part of the AVMA and the Membership and Field Services Division," Dr. Hall said. "I am really looking forward to working with students and helping them shape the future of veterinary medicine. Considering the dynamic changes in the demographics of veterinary school classes, I hope to learn to be responsive to the evolving needs of students and recent graduate members."

Prior to coming to the AVMA, Dr. Hall was as an associate veterinarian at the Northland Veterinary Hospital in Wittenberg, Wis., from July 2007 to April 2008. There he practiced as a mixed- and large-animal ambulatory veterinarian, working on everything from the backyard horse to the prize-winning fair pig with lots of dairy cows in between. Dr. Hall also completed an equine internship at Wisconsin Equine Clinic and Hospital in Oconomowoc from 2006-2007.
