The Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care recently appointed Dr. Christian E. Newcomer (UP '77) as executive director, effective June 1. He succeeds Dr. John G. Miller. Dr. Newcomer previously served as associate provost for animal research and resources at Johns Hopkins University. He also spent time at the National Institutes of Health and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Dr. Newcomer is president of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science and a past president of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine.
No More Homeless Pets, a community coalition in Alachua County, Fla., has honored Dr. Deborah Cottrell (TEX' 80) as its Veterinarian of the Year. Dr. Cottrell, owner of West End Animal Hospital in Newberry, Fla., has spayed more feral cats for the local trap-neuter-return program Operation Catnip than any other visiting veterinarian. She founded Operation Pitnip to provide free spays and neuters for pit bull-type dogs. She also oversees rescue projects for ferrets and Miniature Pinschers.
The Wisconsin VMA recently announced Kim Brown Pokorny as its new executive director, effective June 9. She succeeds Leslie Grendahl. Pokorny was program manager for the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin for eight years. She worked previously for Morgan & Myers, a public relations firm representing the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board. Pokorny earned her master's degree in agricultural industries from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
