posted June 15, 2008

A number of veterinarians attended the 18th Annual Asia Pacific Military Medicine Conference in Singapore in April.

In total, 27 veterinarians attended the conference, with 23 from the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps, three from the Republic of Korea Army Veterinary Corps, and one from the Armed Forces of the Philippines Veterinary Corps.

The conference agenda included two sessions on avian influenza preparedness, marking one of the first times in recent history that Asia Pacific military veterinarians came together to discuss the topic. The U.S. Army Pacific Regional Veterinary Command hosted the sessions, along with an Asia Pacific veterinary breakfast, American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine study group, veterinary mission support breakout session, and junior officer conference.

Another conference highlight was a presentation on the one-health concept by Brigadier General Michael Cates, chief of the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps.

Efforts will continue to expand the number of veterinarians from various countries that attend the conference. The next annual Asia Pacific Military Medicine Conference will be held in Seoul, South Korea, April 6-10.
