The Executive Board approved an action in mid-April to help ensure the continuing viability of the AVMA.

The Member Services Committee recommended that the AVMA start to assess half-dues for retiring members who qualify and apply for retired status.

Dr. John Scamahorn, District VI representative and liaison to the Member Services Committee, noted during the board meeting that the AVMA incurs costs to maintain members. Barbara Baldwin, an assistant director of the AVMA Membership and Field Services Division, said the MSC looked at these cost breakdowns before recommending the change in dues.

The largest age group among members, in five-year increments, is the group from 50 to 54 years old. The change in dues for members requesting retired status, beginning next year, will reduce the financial impact on the Association of the baby boomers among the membership who will soon be reaching retirement age. The board approved allowing members who retire to be eligible for a dues reduction of 50 percent, rather than a full dues exemption.

Baldwin added that the AVMA will now reserve the dues exemption for honor roll members.
