Dr. Ron DeHaven, AVMA executive vice president, was interviewed March 12 on FOX Business Network in Chicago. He discussed the severity of the shortage of food supply veterinarians, the public health implications of the shortage, why the shortage exists, and what's being done to address it. Dr. DeHaven was interviewed by news anchors David Asman and Cheryl Casone and was thanked for providing a balanced report on the issue.
The shortage of food supply veterinarians is a key component of two pieces of legislation that top the AVMA's 110th Congress legislative agenda—the National Veterinary Medical Service Act and the Veterinary Public Health Workforce Expansion Act. Dr. DeHaven and Dr. Gregory S. Hammer, AVMA president, testified in favor of the bills, each in a separate congressional hearing earlier this year.
Along with FOX, other media outlets that have recently reported on the veterinary shortage include the Associated Press, MSNBC, USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal.
