Eric M. McKeeby started work Feb. 11 as communications manager for the AVMA Governmental Relations Division. The purpose of the new position is to enhance the reach and visibility of the GRD office in Washington, D.C.
"We are very excited to have Eric join the AVMA team as communications manager, governmental relations," said Dr. Mark Lutschaunig, GRD director. "His extensive communications experience will bolster our advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill."
McKeeby's responsibilities include the development and production of GRD communications materials—such as talking points, press releases, brochures, issue papers, backgrounders, op-eds, letters to the editor, and congressional testimony. He also will be responsible for maintaining a relationship with the local and national media, planning and executing press conferences, and overseeing content on the GRD Web site.
"The GRD is a key player on a number of crucial issues—including public health, food supply safety and security, and bioterrorism," McKeeby said. "I look forward to helping ensure that the AVMA's important messages reach their intended audiences and result in positive outcomes."
McKeeby comes to the AVMA after serving as communications and public relations manager for the Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society, an organization for professionals whose work relates to the regulation of health products. Previously, McKeeby was a public affairs director and photojournalist with the U.S. Army, serving in Africa as well as the United States. He earned a master's degree in interactive telecommunications from New York University in 2002.
