Event: Annual meeting, Sept. 29-Oct. 1, Yakima
Awards: Veterinarian of the Year: Dr. Warwick M. Bayly, Troy, Idaho. A 1974 graduate of the University of Melbourne, Dr. Bayly is an equine physiologist and dean of Washington State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. He has served as president of the Washington State VMA. WSU Faculty Member of the Year: Dr. John M. Gay, Pullman. A 1978 graduate of Washington State University, Dr. Gay is an associate professor in the Field Disease Investigation Unit at WSU's College of Veterinary Medicine with expertise in dairy and beef practice and production medicine. Knowledgeable about statistics and epidemiology, he serves on the AVMA Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents. Distinguished Achievement Award: Dr. Clive C. Gay, Pullman, in recognition of his record of service to the animal industries of the Pacific Northwest. A 1960 graduate of Ontario Veterinary College and former head of the WSU CVM's Field Disease Investigation Unit, Dr. Gay was instrumental in establishing and operating the most extensive animal disease field investigation service in the state. Humane Animal Welfare Award: Cindy Garrett, Enumclaw, for exemplifying the human-animal bond via her Web site, Hoofbeats in Heaven, which provides support to horse owners who have lost an equine companion. Distinguished Veterinary Staff Award: Tammy L. Hawk, Ellensburg. Hawk works at Valley Veterinary Hospital and was honored for her dedication and exemplary service.
Business: The association decided to consider pursuing legislation to make legal the privilege of confidentiality for veterinary/client records that is not assured under current Washington state law.

Veterinary emergency and critical care groups hold symposium

Event: 12th International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium, Sept. 17-21, San Antonio
Program: Attendees at the symposium—held jointly by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, the Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Society, and the Academy of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Technicians— included 1,323 veterinarians and 862 veterinary technicians. The focus was clinical monitoring. More than 450 hours of continuing education were offered. John Marshall, MD, presented the keynote lecture, "Optimizing strategies beyond evidence-based medicine." Dr. Marshall is a professor of surgery at the University of Toronto. Drs. Barb Dallap and Pam Wilkins of the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center made the case presentation, "Caring for Barbaro."

Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society

Awards: Ira M. Zaslow Distinguished Service Award: Dr. Douglass K. Macintire, Auburn, Ala. A 1980 graduate of Texas A&M University, Dr. Macintire is a professor at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. A diplomate of the ACVECC, she was honored for her extraordinary contributions through teaching, training, and leadership. Hill's Dr. Jack Mara ACVECC Achievement Award: Dr. Marjory Brooks, Ithaca, N.Y., for outstanding achievement in the areas of hemostasis and hypercoagulability in critically ill animals. A 1980 graduate of Cornell University, Dr. Brooks works at Cornell University's Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory. She is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. ACVECC Research Grant Award: Drs. Yekaterina Buriko and Cindy Otto of the University of Pennsylvania, for "Fresh frozen plasma administration in canine parvoviral enteritis: Effects on coagulation system and survival." Dr. Otto was also recognized for outstanding service and accomplishments while serving six years as editor of the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. Resident's Abstract Award, sponsored jointly by VECCS, ACVECC, and Boehringer Ingelheim: A $500 stipend was awarded to Dr. Erica Reineke, University of Pennsylvania, for "The accuracy of a continuous glucose monitoring system in diabetic ketoacidotic dogs and cats." Equine Resident Award, sponsored by Mila International: A $500 stipend was awarded to Dr. Darien Feary, University of California-Davis, for "Traumatic brain injury in horses—diagnosis, management, and outcome in 34 cases (1994-2004)." Case Report Award, sponsored by Pfizer Animal Health: A $300 stipend was awarded to Dr. Gareth Buckley, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for "Salami, anyone?" Technician Case Report Award, sponsored by Pfizer Animal Health: A $300 stipend was awarded to Amy Breton, Tewksbury, Pa., for "Muscle ischemia and reperfusion injury."

Program: The ninth certification examination was conducted. The academy also held a pinning ceremony and reception for the class of 2005.

Wisconsin VMA

 

Event: Annual meeting, Oct. 19-22, Madison
Awards: Veterinarian of the Year: Dr. Laurence E. Baumann, River Falls. A 1978 graduate of Purdue University, Dr. Baumann is professor and extension veterinarian in the Department of Animal and Food Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has served as secretary-treasurer of the Northwest Wisconsin VMA for the past 15 years. Meritorious Service Award: Dr. Alan B. Lippart, Markesan. A 1976 graduate of Michigan State University, Dr. Lippart owns Markesan Veterinary Clinic.
