New computer software that creates study flashcards for veterinarians-to-be and other students was the brainchild of a third-year student at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine.

Mary Gardner developed PC FlashCards with help from her programmer father and webmaster brother. The program allows students to create flashcards, organize cards by subject, attach pictures, test themselves, print cards, and swap cards with classmates.

One of the product's selling points is that buyers can designate a student club, class, or organization to receive a portion of the proceeds from each sale. Gardner said the software has been the best fund-raiser for her veterinary class.

Gardner conceived the idea for the product while completing prerequisites and studying for admission to veterinary college. As she wrote stacks of flashcards by hand, she decided someone should create a program to automate the process.

Students from several other veterinary colleges have purchased the software.
