The American Kennel Club and The Hartz Mountain Corp., along with the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, have announced the 2006 winners of the AKC/Hartz Veterinary Technician Scholarship Program.

Scholarships totaling $37,000 were given to 31 students from 26 U.S. schools of veterinary technology. Six students were presented with a $2,000 award each and 25 students were given a $1,000 award each.

The AKC has given annual scholarships to veterinary students since 1991 and in 2005 expanded the program to include veterinary technician students.

To be eligible, candidates must be full-time students enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program and be a NAVTA student member or a member of a NAVTA student chapter. Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement; activities in the areas of small animals, exotics, and research; and activities in NAVTA and their NAVTA student chapter.

Additional information about the scholarships can be found on the AKC Web site, www.akc.org/vetoutreach, and the NAVTA Web site, www.navta.net.
