UGA taps Allen as dean

Dr. Sheila W. Allen recently stepped up to the role of dean at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. She has served as interim dean since March 1. Dr. Allen succeeds Dr. Keith Prasse, who retired in February after nine years as the college's dean.

A UGA faculty member since 1986, Dr. Allen previously served as associate dean for academic affairs and as acting head of the Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery before assuming the position of interim dean. She earned her DVM degree from Cornell University in 1981.

A diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, Dr. Allen has expertise in oncologic and reconstructive surgery, and perioperative pain management. She has developed computer-assisted techniques for teaching basic surgical skills.

As associate dean for academic affairs, Dr. Allen was a leader in revising the DVM curriculum to give students more flexibility in focusing on their interest areas. She guided the faculty in changing college admissions procedures to allow for assessing applicants on criteria in addition to academic credentials. She also led the college in expanding its enrollment.

Dr. Allen has served as a member of the ACVS board of regents and committees. She also served on the examination committee of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons and was active in the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges.
