The Executive Board approved changes to one of the 11 AVMA accreditation standards. The Council on Education recommended revising standard six, which involves students. The revised paragraph is as follows:

Colleges should establish post-DVM/VMD programs, such as internships, residencies and advanced degrees (e.g. MS, PhD), that complement and strengthen the professional program.

A U.S. Department of Education mandate obligates the council to review and revise the accreditation standards to ensure validity and reliability. Deans of accredited veterinary colleges were asked to comment on the revision.
