Number of stipends doubled for student externship program
Posted May 15, 2005
The Executive Board approved funding for up to 10 stipends annually at $1,000 each for student externships provided by the AVMA Student Externship Stipend Program in 2006 and 2007.
The externship program offers assistance to Student AVMA members seeking to broaden their education through experiences outside private practice, such as public and corporate employment settings. Applicants design and arrange their own externship and present the plan as part of the stipend application process. The Student Stipend Subcommittee of the Member Services Committee reviews and approves the applications.
Currently, the externship program grants $1,000 stipends for up to five students who complete externships in approved public and corporate settings. The Member Services Committee recommended the board approve the additional funding because the program has received an overwhelming positive response from SAVMA members and school faculty. The committee anticipates a substantial growth in the number of applicants for the stipends over the next few years as students become more aware of the program.
