As recommended by the AVMA Council on Research, the Executive Board approved the adoption of an AVMA Position Statement on Comparative Medicine and Translational Research.

Comparative medicine refers to the discipline in which the similarities and differences in animal biology enhance the understanding of human and animal disease mechanisms. Translational research ensures a free flow of information and new treatments from the laboratory to the patient and back again.

Currently, there are no national infrastructures to coordinate efforts that support comparative and translational research within the clinical veterinary medical community. The council believes the position statement will be the first step toward realizing the full potential of the knowledge base that exists in studies of animals with spontaneously occurring disease.
