Earl Baumwell

Dr. Baumwell (OSU '38), 91, Hollywood, Fla., died July 17, 2004. Prior to retirement in 1980, he owned a practice in Hempstead, N.Y., for 33 years. Early in his career, Dr. Baumwell conducted brucellosis testing for the Bureau of Animal Industry in West Virginia for a year. He then transferred to the meat inspection division in New York City.

A World War II veteran, Dr. Baumwell served in the Army for four years in the African Theatre. He attained the rank of captain. Dr. Baumwell's wife, Anita, and three children survive him. His son, Dr. Peter D. Baumwell (GUZ '79), is a veterinarian in Florida. Memorials may be made to The Ohio State University Alumni Fund, Columbus, OH 43210.

David R. Bromwell

Dr. Bromwell (ISU '49), 80, Springfield, Ill., died June 1, 2004. Retired since 2002, he was chief veterinarian of the bureau of animal welfare for the Illinois Department of Agriculture for more than 30 years, drafting the laws for humane treatment of animals in 1973. A member of the Illinois State VMA, Dr. Bromwell had served on its executive board. He was also a member and former head of the Illinois Veterinary Licensing and Disciplinary Board.

Dr. Bromwell received the Illinois Department of Agriculture's Ag Ambassador Award in 2001. In 2002, he was the recipient of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' Lifetime Achievement Award. A World War II veteran, Dr. Bromwell served as a sergeant in the Army in Europe and Africa. He received two Battle stars and a Bronze Star. Dr. Bromwell's wife, Norma Jean, and a son survive him.

Hans O. Ewert

Dr. Ewert (CAL '75), 82, Toledo, Ohio, died April 15, 2004. He owned Ewert Animal Hospital and All Pet Center in Toledo. Prior to that, Dr. Ewert served as veterinarian at the Toledo Zoo. Early in his career, he practiced in his native Germany for several years. Dr. Ewert is survived by his wife, Regine; two sons; and a daughter. His son, Dr. Ulrich E. Ewert (MUN '81), is a veterinarian in Fort Myers, Fla.

Katherine M. Kellner

Dr. Kellner (TEX '91), 49, Stafford, Texas, died June 12, 2004. She owned Critter Care Animal Hospital in Stafford. Dr. Kellner was a board member of the local Animal Emergency Clinic. Kenneth L. Kiehle

Dr. Kiehle (COR '45), 81, Livonia, N.Y., died June 10, 2004. Prior to retirement in 1988, he practiced in Livonia for 42 years. A member of the New York State VMS, Dr. Kiehle had served as president of the Finger Lakes Veterinary Association. He was a veteran of World War II. Dr. Kiehle's wife, Ethel; two sons; and a daughter survive him. Memorials may be made to the Livonia Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 8, Livonia, NY 14487.

Robert C. Leslie

Dr. Leslie (COL '53), 80, Grand Island, Neb., died March 20, 2004. From 1957 until retirement in 1988, he owned Leslie Veterinary Clinic in Grand Island. Dr. Leslie also served as track veterinarian at Fonner Park for 35 years. He was a life member and past president of the Nebraska VMA. Dr. Leslie served as an advisory council member for veterinary technology at the University of Nebraska School of Technical Agriculture.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Dr. Leslie's wife, Mary, and three daughters survive him. Memorials may be made to the Central Catholic Foundation, 1200 Ruby Ave., Grand Island, NE 68803.

Richard O. Murphy

Dr. Murphy (ISU '40), 91, Snohomish, Wash., died Jan. 2, 2004. Prior to retirement, he practiced at Snohomish Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Murphy is survived by his son.

Thomas P. Murphy

Dr. Murphy (COL '53), 78, Saint James, Minn., died June 16, 2004. From 1976 until retirement in 1987, he worked as a plant and health inspector for Butterfield Foods in Saint James. Prior to that, Dr. Murphy was a Department of Agriculture inspector at Dubuque Meats in Dubuque, Iowa. Early in his career, he practiced in McCook, Neb., for 17 years.

Dr. Murphy served in the Army from 1944-1946. His wife, Leora, and two daughters survive him.
