Nominate an AVMA member for Bustad Award - April 1, 2004

Nominate an AVMA member for Bustad Award

Individuals are invited to submit nominations for the annual Bustad Companion Animal Veterinarian-of-the-Year Award, which recognizes outstanding work by veterinarians in preserving and protecting human-animal relationships. The award is named for the late Dr. Leo K. Bustad, a past president of the Delta Society and former dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University.

The AVMA, the Delta Society, and Hill's Pet Nutrition Inc. sponsor the Bustad award. It consists of a $5,000 grant to the winner and a $5,000 grant to the veterinary college or school or not-for-profit service program of the recipient's choice, to further this work.

Nominations must be postmarked by April 15, 2004. To be eligible, a veterinarian must be an AVMA member and have demonstrable accomplishments in at least one of four categories: practice, community service, teaching, or research.

More specifically, the nominee must meet at least one of the following criteria: five years of practice experience through which they exhibited special sensitivity to the human-companion animal bond with various types of clients; three years in a leadership role involving human-animal interactive programs that served the community; three years of incorporating the study of human-animal interactions into veterinary curricula or continuing education; or three years of research, including scholarly publication, that increased the understanding of human-companion animal interactions.
