Candidate for AVMA president-elect shares her aspirations

AVMA president-elect candidate Dr. Bonnie V. Beaver would become the first educator in more than a decade to hold that office—her colleague at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Leon H. Russell, was president in 1993-1994. In the ensuing years, the AVMA will have been led by 10 practitioner presidents.

Currently she is the only candidate for the office. The House of Delegates will vote for president-elect July 19 at its annual session, in Denver.

Dr. Beaver's experience combines two key areas—veterinary education and clinical expertise. A professor in the Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery, she is also known within and beyond the profession for her animal behavior expertise.

In July, she will complete her term as District VIII representative on the AVMA Executive Board, which she chaired in 2001-2002. Here, Dr. Beaver responds to questions about her motivations and aspirations for the profession.
