Robert L. Burton

Dr. Burton (PUR '68), 58, Goodland, Ind., died Jan. 2, 2003. He owned Burton Veterinary Service in Remington, Ind., for 20 years. Dr. Burton was a member of the Indiana VMA and the AABP. He served in the Army for 13 years, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Dr. Burton's wife, Delores, survives him. Memorials may be made to Remington United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 36, Remington, IN 47977.


William E. Green

Dr. Green (MSU '49), 82, Page, N.D., died Nov. 25, 2002. He had worked for the Department of Agriculture's Meat and Poultry Inspection Service, first in South St. Paul, Minn., and later in Fargo, N.D. Following graduation, Dr. Green practiced briefly in Springfield, Minn. He then moved to Olivia, Minn., owning a practice there for 17 years. In 1966, Dr. Green joined the USDA.

An Army veteran, he was assigned to the veterinary attachment at Fort Mills, Corregidor, Philippines, and was taken as a prisoner of war for nearly three years.


Merritt Hinshaw Jr.

Dr. Hinshaw (COL '54), 76, Clifton, Colo., died Dec. 9, 2002. Retired from All Pets Center in Grand Junction, Colo., he had begun his 42-year career by joining a practice that had been at the same location. Dr. Hinshaw served in the Navy submarine corps during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria; a son; a daughter; and three stepdaughters. Joel F. Mahler

Dr. Mahler (GA '77), 51, Raleigh, N.C., died Dec. 17, 2002. He worked for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences' National Toxicology Program in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Known for his expertise in the pathology of genetically modified animals used in cancer research, Dr. Mahler co-authored more than 50 publications in scientific journals and eight book chapters.

He was section editor for Toxicologic Pathology and consulted for the International Life Sciences Institute, the International Agency for Research in Cancer, and the World Health Organization. Dr. Mahler received several awards for his scientific accomplishments. He was a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.

His wife, Beth, and stepson survive him. Memorials in his name may be made to the Orange County Animal Shelter, 1081 Airport Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.


Robert T. McLean

Dr. McLean (KSU '33), 90, Bradbury, Calif., died Jan. 26, 2003. In 1953, he founded the Santa Anita Small Animal Hospital in Monrovia, Calif., practicing there until retirement. Following graduation, Dr. McLean practiced and eventually became a partner at the Ambassador Dog and Cat Hospital in Los Angeles.

He was a past president of the Monrovia Kiwanis Club and served as a trustee for Citrus College for 17 years. Dr. McLean is survived by his wife, Julia, and two sons. Memorials may be made to the Citrus College Foundation, 1000 W. Foothill Blvd., Glendora, CA 91741.


Brannon L. Woods

Dr. Woods (TUS '98), 28, Los Angeles, died Oct. 20, 2002. At the time of his death, he was an intern at Michigan State University's small animal clinic. Prior to that, Dr. Woods practiced at and eventually ran his family's clinic, Angeles City Pet Hospital, in Los Angeles.

His sister, Dr. April M. Woods (TUS '96), practices at the family clinic.
