Protecting Veterinary Medicine
Veterinarians Need Access to Compounding
The FDA has drafted new guidance outlining bulk-compounding activities that are less likely to trigger FDA enforcement, including plans to create a "positive" list of ingredients largely geared toward office-use purposes. The AVMA is collecting nominations for ingredients to include on this list. We need your help with the list, and with answers to other questions FDA has posed.
Proposal Would Mandate Prescription Writing
The so-called Fairness to Pet Owners Act would require veterinarians to give written copies of every prescription for companion animals, whether or not a client requests it.
Help Rural Communities Get Veterinary Care
Ranchers and farmers depend on veterinarians to ensure herd health and a safe food supply. But many rural areas lack access to veterinary care. Congress can change this by passing the VMLRP Enhancement Act.
Pet Food / Product Recalls and Alerts
Get the latest information on recalls and alerts issued regarding pet and animal feeds, including dog and cat foods and treats as well as feeds for livestock, poultry and other species.
Judicious Antibiotic Use in Veterinary Feed
The FDA's Veterinary Feed Directive governs the use and distribution of medically important antibiotics used in food animals. The AVMA is reviewing the final rule, issued in June 2015, and will work with the FDA and stakeholder groups to develop resources for veterinarians and producers.
Canine Influenza & Avian Influenza Outbreaks
There have been several ongoing avian influenza outbreaks in the U.S. since December 2014, and a canine influenza strain previously not seen here arrived from Asia in 2015. We have information to help veterinarians – and clients – understand both
, neither of which is a human health concern at this time.
