Volunteering as an AVMA Officer

Nominations are being accepted for candidates for the position of AVMA President-Elect for the July 2014-July 2015 Association year and AVMA Vice President for a two-year term from July 2014-August 2016. While the nomination deadline was May 1, 2013, nominations will be accepted for these positions until May 1, 2014. A formal election of these positions by the AVMA House of Delegates will take place at the 2014 AVMA Annual Convention in Denver.

Nominations are also being accepted for candidates for the position of AVMA President-Elect for the July 2015-August 2016 Association year. Candidates are encouraged to submit their applications by May 1, 2014.  

According to the Bylaws and the House of Delegates Manual, candidates for election to the office of President-Elect or Vice President must have met the following requirements:

  • Have been voting members of the Association for a period of at least ten (10) continuous years immediately prior to their election; and
  • Have served in the following capacity:
    • At least one term on the Executive Board, one full term on an AVMA council, two full terms on an AVMA committee, four years as a delegate or alternate delegate in the House of Delegates;
    • Or must have had extensive experience in a Principal Veterinary Organization (state veterinary medical association), Constituent Allied Veterinary Organization, or regional veterinary medical association.

No candidate for one of these offices may run for any other office simultaneously.  An individual who is serving on any AVMA entity (e.g., Executive Board, House of Delegates, council, or committee) at the time of election must relinquish his or her seat on that entity when assuming office.

The officers of the Association include the president, president-elect, vice president, treasurer, immediate past president, executive board chair, executive board vice chair, the executive vice president, and the assistant executive vice president. Specific duties and responsibilities of the officers are detailed in the AVMA Bylaws (PDF). 

The president, president-elect, and vice president must be voting members of the Association for at least ten years immediately prior to their election. All other officers must be voting members of the Association immediately prior to their election.

The president-elect, and when necessary, the president are elected at each annual session of the House of Delegates. The terms of the president and president-elect commence at the first regular meeting of the Executive Board following the close of the annual session of the House of Delegates at which they were elected. The president-elect immediately and automatically succeeds to the office of president at the end of the term as president-elect. The president automatically succeeds to the office of immediate past president at the end of the term as President. The vice-president serves a two-year term, which commences at the first regular meeting of the Executive Board following the close of the annual session of the House of Delegates at which they were elected.

The executive vice president, assistant executive vice president, and treasurer are elected annually by the Executive Board. The treasurer can serve a maximum of six consecutive, one-year terms.
